چکیده

Mixed-species grouping is a widespread phenomenon found in arachnids, fish, birds and mammals (Morse 1977; Hodge & Uetz 1992; Bshary & Noë 1997; Herzing & Johnson 1997). Three main reasons have been postulated as to why such heterospecific groups are formed: (1) to improve foraging efficiency, (2) to reduce predation and (3) by chance encounters (Waser 1984; Sakai & Kohda 1995; Noë & Bshary 1997; Chapman & Chapman 2000). Because monospecific grouping can also provide foraging and anti-predator benefits, various advantages of mixed-species groups over single-species associations have been proposed. Most of these advantages stem from the differential sensory capabilities of Correspondence Christina A. D. Cost/benefit analysis of group and solitary resting in the cowtail stingray, Pastinachus sephen

Unless a safe refuge is found where predation threats are negligible, resting poses risks for many animals, necessitating risk management strategies. The adult cowtail stingray (Pastinachus sephen) of Shark Bay, Western Australia, is a solitarily foraging animal that facultatively groups when resting on shallow, inshore sand flats. We hypothesized that environmental conditions influence the pro...

We studied the age and growth of four sympatric stingrays: reticulate whipray, Himanutra uarnak (n=19); blue mask, Neotrygon kuhlii (n=34); cowtail, Pastinachus atrus (n=32) and blue-spotted fantail, Taeniura lymma (n=40) rays at Ningaloo Reef, a fringing coral reef on the north-western coast of western Australia. Age estimates derived from band counts within sectioned vertebrae ranged between ...

New locality record for the parasitic leech Pterobdella amara, and two new host stingrays at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia

An individual of the cowtail stingray (Pastinachus sephen) was identified at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia as having a high number of parasitic leeches and gnathiid isopods primarily inhabiting its mouth, jaw and gills. It was underweight for its length and disc width when compared with other individuals of this species and its stomach was bloated and empty. It is proposed that the high dens...

Two new species of Acanthobothrium (Tetraphyllidea: Onchobothriidae) from Pastinachus cf. sephen (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae) from the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.

Two new species of Acanthobothrium van Beneden, 1850 from the spiral intestine of Pastinachus cf. sephen Forsskål from the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman are described. To analyse the surface ultrastructure the worms were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Acanthobothrium jalalii sp. n. belongs to the category 1 species of the genus so far including 43...
